FOR the past month, it has been a buyer’s market in the High Streets, as Britain, in a manner of speaking, set about “looting itself” – management and customers stripping even the fixtures and fittings out of Woolworths stores, desperate surviving retailers claiming they were discounting their wares by up to 70%, and long line-ups to withdraw cash from bank branches (corporates are rushing to amass cashpiles, too, following the equities debacle).
